Lighting: Design, Pre-visualisation, Programming and Operation

Lighting: Design, Pre-visualisation, Programming and Operation

I provide lighting support for live, corporate, conference, hybrid and streamed events—covering design, WYSIWYG pre-visualisation (where useful), programming and on-site operation.

The role can be defined to suit the project, covering design, pre-visualisation, programming, operation, or a combination of these. The priority is reliable delivery: lighting that works in the room, supports camera positions where required, and is backed by pre-configured showfiles and clear documentation.

What I cover

Lighting design and planning

  • Practical lighting concepts and looks aligned to the brief, venue and schedule
  • Fixture positioning and coverage planning with sightlines, screens and scenic in mind
  • Key light and camera-friendly choices for streamed / hybrid / broadcast formats
  • Layout notes and coordination with rigging, power and scenic requirements

WYSIWYG pre-visualisation (when it adds value)

Pre-vis is most useful when approvals are needed, time on site is tight, or the build has multiple stakeholders. Where required I can:

  • Build or adapt a 3D representation of the space
  • Pre-visualise fixture positions, coverage and key looks
  • Support reviews and sign-off before build day
  • Use the model as a base for programming and show operation
  • Pre-program the show for a quick rig and setup

Programming and show operation

  • Console programming and showfile build
  • Cue stacks, playback, and busking workflows depending on the format
  • Rehearsal support and clean show control on tight schedules
  • On-site troubleshooting: addressing, data distribution, fixture behaviour and showfile stability
  • Clear handover notes when working with other operators or teams

Consoles

  • ChamSys
  • Avolites Titan
  • Jands Vista
  • Also comfortable on simpler consoles where the show requires it

Typical scenarios

  • Conferences and corporate events
  • Broadcast and studio environments
  • Film and recorded shoots
  • Virtual and hybrid events
  • Studio livestreams and remote contribution setups
  • Awards shows and formal presentations
  • Product launches and brand-led events

Documentation and deliverables

Documentation is scaled to the job, but typically include:

  • Lighting plan / layout notes
  • Cable calls
  • Patch notes and addressing (where required)
  • WYSIWYG files/renders for review (when used)
  • Showfile and cue/playback notes
  • On-site operation through rehearsals and show
  • Post-show notes for repeat events or touring formats
